| Much earlier
to the formation of The Institution of Engineers (India),
in the old Mysore, an Association of Engineers was formed
in the year 1863 from amongst the engineers of Public Works
Department on a modest scale to cater to the technical needs
of the engineers. On expansion of its membership and activities,
it was registered as Mysore Engineers’
Association in the year 1906. The State Government
gave a site free of cost at K R Circle next to the University
Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and also provided a grant
for construction of the Association building. The Association
moved to the new building in 1940. The Association became
active and conducted a number of Lectures, Seminars, Workshops
on engineering subjects and published technical journals also.
After formation of The Institution of Engineers
(India), the Karnataka State Centre was established in the
year 1934. Many engineers of the then State of Mysore enrolled
as members of The Institution of Engineers (India) also. The
activities of the Institution of Engineers (India) gave a
wider scope and variety though they were similar to Mysore
Engineers’ Association. Hence, it was felt by the Executive
Committee Members of the two Institutions in the State to
merge the Mysore Engineers’ Association with the Local
Centre of The Institution of Engineers (India) as this would
avoid duplication of activities and strengthen the Local Centre
to greater extent.
The Mysore Engineers’ Association conducted
its Centenary celebrations on 26th January, 1964. His
Highness Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, the then Governor
of Mysore presided and Sri S Nijalingappa,
Chief Minister inaugurated the function. After the Centenary
celebrations, the cherished desire of the engineering fraternity
for amalgamation came into effect on
Sunday, 24th May, 1964 presided over by Dr. K L Rao.
:The Institution recognizes no frontiers
and symbolizes the spirit of techno - cultural collaboration
between different branches of engineering with acquisition
and dissemination of knowledge as its primary function. The
Institution enfolds within its ambit all academically acceptable
disciplines in engineering and technology and covers at present
Agricultural, Architectural, Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Computer,
Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Environmental,
Marine, Mechanical, Metallurgy & Material Science, Mining,
Production and Textile Engineering.
Karnataka State Centre declared as one of
the most active Centres in the country in the context of technical
activities plays a very significant role in dissemination
and proliferation of engineering knowledge amongst its members
through Seminars, Symposia, Workshops, Conventions, etc both
at national and international levels. It also acts as a qualifying
body in conducting AMIE examinations under its non-formal
educational programmes to cater to the needs and aspirations
of the profession.
The Karnataka State Centre is very fortunate
to have the direct blessings of Sir MV, the Engineer Statesman
in whose presence the foundation of the State Centre was laid
