Indian
Engineers’ Attain World Mobility
The Institution of Engineers (India)(IEI) obtained full membership
of the Engineers Mobility Forum in its bi-annual International Engineering
Meeting held on 17 Jun 09 at Kyoto, Japan. The IEI delegation in
the meeting was led by the President IEI, Rear Admiral K O Thakare,
Immediate Past President IEI, Shri R P Gupta and Secretary &
Director General Cdr A K Poothia, IN (Retd).
The Engineers
Mobility Forum agreement is an International Recognition Agreement
for Professional Engineers. Engineering organisations in the member
jurisdictions create the framework for the establishment of an international
standard of competence for professional engineering. The International
Agreements empowers each member organization to establish a section
of the International Professional Engineers Register.
Each member operates a national section of the International Professional
Engineer (IntPE) register. Engineers on this international register
receive credit when seeking registration or license in the jurisdiction
of another member. Engineers on international register are free
to practice engineering in member countries and are recognized at
par with local professional engineers. Presently, the members of
the Engineers Mobility Forum are Australia, Canada, Chinese
Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and United States.
The IEI is now authorised to operate Indian Section of the International
Register of Professional Engineers. Eligible Indian Professional
Engineers after due process would be placed on International Register.
They would be entitled to exclusively use the title IntPE (India)
indicating their international status.
With IEI becoming part of the International Agreement on mobility,
on one hand Indian Professional Engineers would be readily acceptable
for practice in foreign countries and on other hand a system for
quality certification of incoming engineers would be easily available
for employers in India. Additionally, Professional Engineers certified
to international standards would also command higher recognition
in domestic market with local and foreign employers.
The recognition of IEI as full Member of EMF would provide level
playing field, mobility and recognition to Indian engineers.
